What the register adds.
Combined state and average local sales tax for any U.S. state — or your exact local rate, if you know it.
Rates as of 1 July 2026, from the Tax Foundation’s midyear state and local sales tax rate report.
| Purchase amount | $250.00 |
| Sales tax | $22.13 |
| Total | $272.13 |
Average local rates are population-weighted; a specific city can be meaningfully higher or lower. Product exemptions such as groceries and clothing are not applied.
How sales tax is actually stacked in the United States
There is no national sales tax in the United States. Every rate you pay is assembled locally: a statewide rate set by the legislature, plus whatever the county, the city and any special districts — transit authorities, stadium districts, tourism zones — have layered on top. That is why the same purchase costs different amounts twenty minutes apart.
The gap between the headline rate and the real one is the part most calculators hide. Colorado charges just 2.9% statewide, among the lowest in the country, yet combined rates in Denver-area cities run past 8% once local levies are added. Louisiana runs the opposite way: a modest 5% state rate and the highest average local rate in the nation.
Five states levy no statewide sales tax at all — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon — and of those only Alaska lets its municipalities charge one. If you are comparing a large purchase across state lines, the sales tax difference on a car or an appliance is frequently worth more than the price difference.
Rate alone does not settle what you owe. Most states exempt or reduce tax on groceries and prescription drugs, several exempt clothing below a threshold, and some hold annual sales tax holidays on school supplies. Use the exact-rate field with the rate printed on a recent receipt when you want the number to match to the cent.
Common questions
Is the rate based on where I live or where I buy?
Generally where the goods are delivered or used — the destination. Online orders are taxed at your shipping address in most states, which is why two identical orders can carry different tax.
Why is my receipt slightly different from this figure?
The average local rate here is population-weighted across a whole state. Enter your exact combined rate to match a specific address, and remember exempt items are excluded from the taxable base.
Do I owe tax on an out-of-state purchase?
Usually yes, as use tax, if the seller did not collect it. Most states ask for it on the annual income tax return, though enforcement on small consumer purchases is rare.
